How long is fridge food safe without power?

The clock started when the lights went out. Here are the numbers that matter, from federal food-safety guidance.

Do this now

  1. Keep both doors closed. An unopened refrigerator keeps food safe about 4 hours.
  2. Note the time the power went out. Write it on the fridge door if you have to.
  3. A full freezer holds a safe temperature about 48 hours — a half-full one, about 24 hours.
  4. If you have them, move ice or frozen water bottles into the fridge compartment.

The rules, in order

Every door opening spends cold you cannot get back. The 4-hour figure assumes the door stays shut. After 4 hours without power, perishable food in the refrigerator — meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, cut fruit, leftovers — should go in a cooler with ice, or it starts becoming unsafe.

The 40°F line is the real rule. Perishable food that spends more than 2 hours above 40°F (4°C) should be discarded — that's true with or without a storm. A simple appliance thermometer turns guessing into knowing.

When the power comes back

Check the freezer: food that still has ice crystals or reads 40°F or below can be refrozen safely, though quality may suffer. Anything that thawed and sat warm — discard. When in doubt, throw it out. Taste and smell are not tests; the bacteria that make you sick don't announce themselves.

Common questions

Is food safe after a 3-hour power outage?

If the refrigerator stayed closed, yes — an unopened fridge keeps food safe about 4 hours per federal food-safety guidance. Move perishables to a cooler with ice if the outage will run longer.

Can I refreeze food after the power comes back?

Yes, if it still contains ice crystals or has stayed at 40°F (4°C) or below. Quality may drop, but it's safe. Food that fully thawed and warmed up should be discarded.

How long does a freezer last without power?

About 48 hours for a full freezer and 24 hours for a half-full one — if the door stays closed.
