Texts won't send. Here's what still works.
After a disaster the network usually isn't gone — it's jammed. Knowing the difference is the whole game.
Do this now
- Text, don't call. Texts queue and retry through congestion; calls need a clean channel.
- Keep texts short and to one person — your out-of-area contact — not a group thread.
- If home internet is up, turn on Wi-Fi Calling (Settings → Cellular).
- On iPhone 14 or later, no bars at all still gets you Emergency SOS via satellite — follow the on-screen aiming guide.
- Low Power Mode on, screen brightness down, and stop refreshing feeds. The battery is now a utility.
Why everything fails at once
Everyone in the affected area picks up their phone in the same ten minutes. Cell sites also fail or lose backup power in storms, so the surviving towers carry multiples of normal load. That's why your phone shows bars but nothing goes through — the road exists; it's gridlocked.
The order to try things
- SMS text to your out-of-area contact — the smallest, most resilient message there is
- Wi-Fi calling and messaging if any broadband survives
- Moving 100 yards — sometimes you're in one dead cell and the next one over is fine
- Satellite (iPhone 14+): Emergency SOS works with no network at all; recent iPhones can also send ordinary texts by satellite
Stretching one battery across days
Low Power Mode, airplane mode between check-ins (a phone hunting for signal drains fastest of all), brightness low, one designated phone on at a time per household, car chargers rationed with the engine running in the open — never in a closed garage.
Do not
- Don't keep redialing — every failed call adds to the jam that's blocking everyone's texts.
- Don't stream, scroll, or refresh. The battery is your lifeline now.
- Don't let the phone search for signal all night — airplane mode between scheduled check-ins.
- Don't charge the phone in a car inside a closed garage.

Network congestion — everyone is transmitting at once on fewer working towers. Keep the message short, send to one person, and let the phone retry; texts queue in ways calls can't.
